The North American Carillon

Description of the Carillon

  • Carillon is housed in bell tower of a church or municipal building

  • Consists of at least 23 cast bronze, cup-shaped bells

  • Second HEAVIEST of all extant musical instruments

  • Must have a minimum of 23 bells to as many as 77

  • It is a pitched instrument

  • It is seldom played with another instrument--evolved as a folk instrument

  • Due to its rich tonal structure of the bells, there is no need to to have a large number of bells played together to get the same sound
