Description:
Conga, also known as tumbadora is tall, narrow, single-headed drum from Cuba
Traditionally used in Afro-Cuban genres such as conga, rumba--common to some Latin music
Modern congas have staved wooden or fiberglass shell--can be played while seated
Conga players are called congueros--while rumberos refers to those who dance following the path of the players
Techniques / Uses:
There are five basic strokes
Open tone
Muffled/Mute tones
Bass tone
Slap tone
Touch tone
"Glissando" or moose call is done by rubbing third finger across head of drum
To bend the pitch, conguero uses elbow to shift around on and apply pressure to different parts of the head
Famous Congueros include Chano Pozo, Jack Costanzo, Jesús Días, Eliel Lazo
